Dayana Cordero (12-5-2, 11 KO’s) retained the interim WBA bantamweight title last night, stopping challenger Maribel Ramirez (9-9-2, 3 KO’s) in the seventh round of their contest at Coliseo Municipal in the champs homeland of Colombia.
Cordero scored two knockdowns in her first defense, dropping Ramirez in the opening frame and once again in the third. She took a few shots from the challenger, but never lost control of the fight. Pressing the action, the champ finally dropped her Mexican counterpart in the seventh round with a three punch combination, where referee Melva Santos reached the 10 count.
This was the second straight KO win for Cordero, who had failed in four prior title attempts before finally winning the interim strap in January with a fourth round TKO of Fedalatin title holder Sayda Mosquera. Maribel Ramirez has only won two contests since 2011.
