As reported Saturday night by The Boxing Tribune, world welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus (27-0, 7 KO’s) retained the WBA, WBO, WBC, and IBF titles with a dominant performance over IBO and GBC title-holder Jennifer Retzke (15-2-1, 9 KO’s) in Denmark. During the contest, Braekhus injured her right foot and it’s being reported that she’ll be laid up for at least a month. She will also undergo an MRI upon her return home to Berlin to assess the extent of the injury, though word is that there are no broken bones. “It doesn’t matter that I won’t be able to train for a while now, because the plan was to take it easy after this fight,” Brækhus told news bureau NTB. Saturday night’s recap can be read HERE.
The WBA light welterweight champion Ana Laura Esteche (11-3-2, 2 KO’s) took a 10 round split decision over WBO light welterweight champ Fernanda Soledad Alegre (20-2-1, 10 KO’s) in a non-title contest. Esteche, who also held the WBO lightweight title, won the WBA strap in January and scored a 10 round draw with Svetlana Kulakova in her first defense in June. Alegre won her WBO title four years ago and has 10 successful defenses.
Former world champion Ivana Habazin (14-2, 5 KO’s) won a six round contest over Galina Gumliiska (10-34, 1 KO) in Croatia. This was Habazin’s first outing since her loss to Cecilia Braekhus in September that cost her the IBF title and made Braekhus the most successful female boxer to date, unifying the four major world titles.
Heather “The Heat” Hardy (11-0, 2 KO’s) will be in action this Wednesday at BB King Blues Club & Grill in New York City. The current UBF and WBC International super bantamweight champion will be facing Utah’s Elizabeth Anderson (3-5) in a scheduled eight round non-title bout. The Brooklyn native is the subject of Natasha Verma’s film “Hardy”, which will be screened December 5th at the 3rd Annual Shadow Box Film Festival at the SVA Theater in New York City.
Also on December 5th, former world super bantamweight champion Ana Julaton (13-4-1, 2 KO’s) will be fighting in her third MMA contest at One FC 23: Warrior’s Way at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines. Julaton (MMA record 1-1, 1 KO) will face Walaa Abas Mohamed Kamaly (2-1, 2 KO’s). This is shaping up to be an interesting contest, as both fighters’ victories have come by stoppage due to punches, and Kamaly’s loss was also a TKO due to punches. Julaton comes in off a close split decision loss in August to Ann Osman at One FC 19.
