My apologies for the late break with the Women’s Wrap Up, personal obligations kept me away, but the ladies do deserve their coverage even if I am a bit late in reporting it. These are the results for last week’s world title bouts, the last of world title action for the year.
At the El San Juan Resort in Puerto Rico, Hanna Gabriel (14-1-1, 10 KO’s) returned after nearly two years to regain the WBO light middleweight championship, stopping Mexico’s Paty Ramirez (10-2, 5 KO’s) in the second round.
The taller Ramirez couldn’t land a shot, and looked to be just a hair off with her punches. Gabriel threw effective combinations, mixing her head and body attack, repeatedly landing the right hand to the head. After a moderately paced first round, she turned up the heat in the second, and had the fight over just about 40 seconds in.
Gabriel had originally won the WBO welterweight title in 2010 and moved up in weight her next bout, winning the light middleweight belt and defending it three times. In February of 2013, then undefeated Oxandia Castillo dealt her first defeat, scoring a second round stoppage to win the title. The belt was vacated when Castillo moved up to the welterweight division and remained vacant after a contest for the title between Christina Hammer and Anne Sophie Mathis ended in a no contest.
Gabriela Bouvier (12-5-1, 2 KO’s) and Leonela Paola Yudica (9-0-2) headlined a card at Club 1º de Mayo in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Bouvier was making the second defense of the IBF flyweight title.
After two prior fails at the WBC belt, being stopped on both occasion by Mariana Juarez, Bouvier was finally successful in October of last year when she took a one sided decision over Florencia Canteros to win the vacant title. She made she made one defense, a decision win over Carolina Alvarez, who has challenged unsuccessfully for world titles on four prior occasions. Yudica took to the pro ranks a little over two and a half years ago, and in her last outing in October, won the Argentina flyweight title in her first 10 round bout.
Though the contest was close at some points, it was the challenger that came away landing the more effective punches overall, and controlling the pace of the bout. Final scores of 97-93 twice in favor of Yudica and 96-94 in favor of Bouvier kept Yudica’s undefeated record in tact and awarded her the first world championship of her young career.
In an under card bout, former WBO lightweight champion Maria Elena Maderna (14-9-3, 2 KO’s) won a six round decision over Maria Ruiz (5-8-1). Maderna had won the title in June of 2013 and defended it successfully on three occasions before being stopped by Amanda Serrano in August. This was her first fight back following that loss.
Former WBC silver featherweight titleholder Betiana Patricia Vinas (10-5-3, 2 KO’s) and Natalia Vanesa del Valle Aguirre (7-3-3) faced off for the vacant IBF super featherweight title in San Martin, Argentina. Aguirre was coming off a loss to Victoria Bustos in an IBF lightweight title bout. Vinas, who hadn’t fought in over a year, had also lost her last outing. In October of 2013 she dropped a 10 round decision to Claudia Lopez who, at the time, held the IBF title super featherweight belt that Vinas and Aguirre were fighting for.
Vinas came out the winner in this one, taking a comfortable unanimous decision by scores of 97-93 twice and 99-91, securing her first world championship.
Also on the card, WBA super bantamweight champion Yesica Patricia Marcos (26-0-2, 9 KO’s) took a non-title, stay busy fight against Antonina Ayala Vazquez (12-11-3, 3 KO’s), winning a six round decision. Marcos has held the WBA strap since 2010 when she first won the interim version of the title. A 2012 win over Dayana Cordero for the vacant “regular” title earned her full championship status, and she has made three successful defenses since and held the WBO title for a short period as well. Championship status is shared with Jackie Nava (31-4-3, 13 KO’s), who holds the WBA “super” world title in the same division.
