Australian featherweight Brayd Smith (12-1, 10 KO’s) passed away earlier today, two days after taking his first defeat from John Vincent Moralde, who won a unanimous 10 round decision in Toowoomba Saturday night. He was 23 years old.
The WBC Youth featherweight title holder was on his feet and speaking with friends at ringside following Saturdays contest, but collapsed a short time later in the dressing room. He was airlifted to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital, where he was placed in a medically induced coma and placed on life support. Family spokesman James O’Shea announced his death on Monday.
Smith had been a pro for three and a half years, and was in his final year of studying for his Bachelor of Law degree at University of Southern Queensland.
