In tonight’s main event at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California, Alfonso Gomez (25-6-2, 12 KO’s) scored a unanimous decision over Yoshihiro Kamegai (25-3-1, 22 KO’s) with all three judges scoring the fight comfortably for Gomez at 98:91. Though Kamegai was the aggressor and landed the harder shots, it Gomez who had the superior skills, faster hands, and better accuracy. He would slow down in the later rounds of the bout, where Kamegai would do his best work, but he was never in any real danger of losing the fight. The win is Gomez’s second since losing back-to-back contests to Saul Alvarez and Shawn Porter in 2011/2012.
The nights co-feature saw Ronny Rios (24-1, 10 KO’s) take a successful first step towards getting his career back on track, scoring a 10 round unanimous decision over Sergio Frias (16-5-2, 8 KO’s) by scores of 99:91 twice and 98:92. Rios pressed the action and dictated the pace of the fight, but Frias fought back hard every step of the way, making this a much closer fight than the scores would indicate. This was Rios’s first fight back after taking a fifth round TKO loss at the hands of Robinson Castellanos last October.
In the telecasts opening bout, lightweight Jamie Kavanagh (18-1-1, 9 KO’s) slugged his way to a fifth round stoppage victory over Miguel Zamudio (32-7-1, 18 KO’s). An entertaining bout for as long as it lasted, Zamudio managed to drop Kavanagh at the close of the second round, but following the fifth, the ringside doctor felt he was taking too much punishment and stopped the contest. Kavanagh’s now won three straight outings since his stoppage loss to Daniel Ruiz over as year ago.
